San Giovanni in Laterano History

Constantine donated the old Lateran Palace to the then Archbishop of Rome around 313 and it was converted to a house of worship.  It underwent several different fazes of reconstruction over the centuries, the most notable of which are the northern and eastern facades erected in 1586 and 1735 respectively.  Their impressive image can be seen from rooftops all over Rome, and are clearly visible from the daily flights landing in the city’s airports.  The seat of the Catholic Church for centuries, it has, and still does hold primacy amongst Rome’s four Patriarchal Basilicas.
